¿Qué es staking?

Staking is the process of locking cryptocurrency in a blockchain network to help validate transactions and secure the network. In return, stakers receive rewards, usually newly issued tokens plus a share of transaction fees. Your deposit is not idle: it is the collateral that keeps the blockchain honest.

Staking exists because of Proof of Stake (PoS), a consensus mechanism that replaced the energy-intensive Proof of Work (PoW) model used by Bitcoin. In PoW, miners compete by running computationally expensive calculations. In PoS, validators are selected to propose and attest to new blocks based on the amount of cryptocurrency they have staked as collateral. If a validator acts honestly, it earns rewards. If it cheats, part of its stake is slashed (confiscated). If it goes offline, it pays smaller penalties.

Ethereum's transition from PoW to PoS in September 2022 (known as "The Merge") was the largest staking event in crypto history. According to ethereum.org, it cut the network's energy use by about 99.95%. Ethereum is now the largest staking ecosystem by value staked. The live number of validators and the total ETH staked are published on the Ethereum launchpad (see Sources).

Ingresos pasivos

Earn staking rewards that vary by network and move with the amount staked, without active trading.

Eficiencia energética

Per ethereum.org, PoS cut Ethereum's energy use by about 99.95% compared with PoW mining. No specialized hardware is needed to delegate.

1

Validadores

Validators are nodes that propose and verify new blocks on a Proof of Stake network. To become an Ethereum validator, you deposit at least 32 ETH into the deposit contract and run validator software (such as Prysm, Lighthouse or Teku) on a machine that stays online around the clock. The protocol randomly selects validators to propose blocks and assigns committees to attest (vote) on block validity.

On Solana, validators must stake SOL and run high-performance hardware to keep up with the network's throughput. On Cosmos-based chains, the active validator set is capped at a number set by governance, which creates competition for delegation.

2

Delegación

Most stakers do not run their own validator. Instead, they delegate their tokens to an existing validator. Delegation means you assign your staking power to a validator while retaining ownership of your tokens. The validator operates the infrastructure and passes the rewards on to delegators, minus a commission that each validator sets and displays before you delegate.

3

Periodos de bloqueo & desbloqueo

When you stake tokens, they are locked for a network-defined period. On Ethereum, exits go through a queue whose length depends on how many validators are leaving: it can take under a day when the queue is quiet and weeks when it is busy. Cosmos Hub imposes a 21-day unbonding period during which your tokens earn no rewards and cannot be transferred. Polkadot has a 28-day unbonding period. Solana's cooldown ends at the next epoch boundary, roughly two days.

4

Penalización

Slashing is a penalty mechanism that punishes validators for malicious behavior or severe negligence. On Ethereum, a validator can be slashed for double signing (proposing two different blocks for the same slot) or surround voting (contradicting a previous attestation). A slashed validator loses an initial penalty taken from its balance, is forced to exit, and pays a correlation penalty that grows with the number of validators slashed in the same period (see the ethereum.org page on rewards and penalties in Sources).

Staking rewards come from two sources: network inflation (newly minted tokens distributed to validators) and transaction fees (tips and priority fees paid by users). The ratio between these two sources varies by network. On Ethereum since The Merge, priority fees (tips) supplement the base issuance reward, and in busy periods fee revenue can exceed issuance.

The APY (annual percentage yield) you earn from staking falls as the total amount staked on the network rises. As more tokens are staked, the rewards are distributed among more participants, reducing the per-staker return. This creates a natural equilibrium: if staking rewards become too low, some stakers exit, which increases the APY for remaining stakers.

Red Reward Profile Live Rate and Data Periodo de bloqueo
Ethereum (ETH) Lower rate, issuance plus priority fees Ethereum launchpad Exit queue, hours to weeks
Solana (SOL) Inflation-funded, declining schedule Solana docs and explorers Next epoch, about 2 days
Cosmos (ATOM) High nominal rate, inflation-funded Cosmos Hub docs 21 días
Polkadot (DOT) High nominal rate, inflation-funded Polkadot wiki 28 días
Avalanche (AVAX) Moderate, inflation-funded Avalanche docs Fixed term chosen at delegation
Cardano (ADA) Lower rate, paid per epoch Cardano docs Sin bloqueo

Important note: a higher staking APY does not necessarily mean better returns. Networks with high inflation pay higher nominal rewards, but the real return is the staking rate minus the inflation rate. Ethereum's lower staking yield is partly offset by its fee burn (EIP-1559), which can shrink the ETH supply in busy periods. Always judge staking returns against the network's monetary policy, and check the live rates on the sources listed at the end of this guide: rates move as the amount staked changes.

Protocols like Lido (stETH), Rocket Pool (rETH), and Jito (jitoSOL) let you stake tokens and receive a liquid derivative token in return. This derivative accrues staking rewards and can be used across DeFi, as collateral on Aave, in Balancer liquidity pools, or in Morpho lending markets.

Pros: No lock-up, capital efficiency, composable with DeFi. Cons: Smart contract risk, protocol fees (Lido charges 10% of rewards, per its docs), and the derivative can trade at a discount during market stress.

Staking DeFi

Centralized exchanges like Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken offer one-click staking services. You deposit your crypto, the exchange handles validator operations, and you receive staking rewards minus a commission set by the exchange (check its fee page; it is usually higher than self-staking). Coinbase's cbETH and Binance's BETH are exchange-issued liquid staking tokens.

Pros: Simplest user experience, no technical setup, some offer instant unstaking. Cons: Custodial (you trust the exchange with your funds), higher fees, regulatory risk, counterparty risk.

1

Elige tu activo

Decide which PoS token you want to stake. Consider the staking APY, lock-up period, network fundamentals, and your existing portfolio. ETH and SOL are the most popular choices because of their large ecosystems and deep liquidity. Networks like Cosmos or Polkadot quote higher nominal yields, but they also apply longer unbonding periods.

2

Elija un validador o plataforma

For native staking, research validators on tools like rated.network (Ethereum), stakewiz.com (Solana), or mintscan.io (Cosmos). Evaluate uptime, commission rate, total stake, and slashing history. For liquid staking, compare protocols: Lido (the largest by total value locked, or TVL; 10% fee on rewards), Rocket Pool (permissionless node operators; commission published in its docs), or Jito (Solana; adds MEV rewards, where MEV stands for maximal extractable value). For simplicity, exchange staking via Coinbase or Kraken is one click.

3

Delegar o Depositar

Recibirás stETH a cambio.

4

Monitorea tu posición

Track your staking rewards using portfolio trackers like Zapper, DeBank, or the staking dashboard of your chosen protocol. For Lido, your stETH balance increases daily as rewards accrue. For native staking, check your validator's performance regularly. If uptime drops noticeably (for example below about 98%) or the commission changes, consider redelegating to a better-performing validator.

5

Reinvertir o Retirar

With liquid staking tokens like stETH, rewards auto-compound as the token's value appreciates relative to ETH. For native staking on Cosmos, you need to manually claim and restake rewards to compound. When you want to exit, initiate the unstaking process and wait for the cooldown period, or sell your liquid staking token on a decentralized exchange (DEX) like CowSwap for instant liquidity.

APY típico Varies by network and amount staked Varies with borrowing demand Wide range, often incentive-driven
Periodo de bloqueo Días a semanas Normalmente ninguno Normalmente ninguno
Riesgo principal Corte, caída del precio del token Hackeo del protocolo, deuda incobrable Pérdida impermanente, estafas rug
Complejidad Bajo Bajo Medio-Alto

Tip: These strategies are not mutually exclusive. Many experienced DeFi users combine staking and lending by using liquid staking tokens (like stETH) as collateral in lending protocols like Morpho to borrow stablecoins, which can then be deployed for additional yield. This "leveraged staking" strategy amplifies returns but also amplifies liquidation risk. See our yield farming guide for how these loops work.

Your validator can be penalized for double signing, extended downtime, or other protocol violations. On Ethereum, a slashed validator loses an initial penalty, is forced to exit and pays a correlation penalty that can reach the whole stake in extreme, coordinated events. Delegators share this loss proportionally.

Riesgo de bloqueo

During unbonding periods (21 days on Cosmos, 28 days on Polkadot), you cannot sell or transfer your tokens. If the market falls sharply during this window, your staking rewards will not offset the price loss. Lock-up risk is a form of forced illiquidity.

Riesgo de contrato inteligente

Liquid staking protocols introduce smart contract risk. If the Lido contract is exploited, your stETH could become worthless even though the underlying ETH validators are fine. Multiple audits reduce but never eliminate this risk. In mid-2022, stETH traded at a clear discount to ETH during the Terra collapse and the wider market stress, before recovering after The Merge.

Costo de oportunidad

Capital locked in staking cannot be used for potentially higher-return opportunities like trading, yield farming, or new protocol launches. If a better opportunity appears while your tokens are in a 21-day unbonding queue, you miss the window. Liquid staking mitigates but does not eliminate this risk.

Dilución por inflación

High staking APY funded primarily by inflation does not necessarily increase your real purchasing power. As an illustration, if a network inflates its supply by 15% a year and staking pays 18%, the real return is about 3%. Non-stakers get diluted, which subsidizes staker returns. Always evaluate nominal APY minus network inflation.

Centralización de validadores

Lido has for years been the largest single staking provider on Ethereum, with a large share of all staked ETH (the live share is on Lido's and rated.network's dashboards). If a single liquid staking protocol dominates, it creates systemic risk for the entire network. Choosing diverse validators and smaller staking providers helps maintain network health and reduces single-point-of-failure risk.

On Ethereum, consider distributing between Lido (stETH), Rocket Pool (rETH), and a smaller provider like StakeWise or Swell. Each protocol uses different validator sets, so a problem with one does not affect your entire position.

Liquid staking tokens like stETH, rETH, and jitoSOL let you earn staking rewards while keeping your capital productive in DeFi. You can deposit stETH into Morpho as collateral to borrow USDC, then deploy that USDC into a stablecoin yield strategy. This "recursive staking" approach can raise your effective yield, but it introduces liquidation risk if the ETH price drops.

A simpler approach: hold liquid staking tokens in Balancer wstETH/ETH pools or Curve stETH/ETH pools, earning trading fees on top of staking rewards with minimal impermanent loss since both assets are correlated.

3. Recompensas compuestas regularmente

On networks where rewards do not auto-compound (Cosmos, Polkadot, native Solana staking), manually claiming and restaking rewards makes a meaningful difference over time. With a 15% simple annual rate, daily compounding lifts the effective annual return to about 16.2%. Yield aggregators like Beefy automate this process for supported staking positions.

Coinstancy Dollar Savings offers 7.50% APY on USDC, the fixed rate currently in force. Interest accrues every second and is automatically reinvested, there is no lock-up, and withdrawals are available anytime. That makes it a natural complement to PoS staking, where your capital may be locked for days or weeks. See our stablecoin yield guide for the wider picture.

5. Monitorizar y Reequilibrar

Staking is not set-and-forget. Monitor your validators' performance monthly. If a validator's uptime drops noticeably (below about 98%) or it raises its commission significantly, redelegate to a better-performing validator. Track the network's staking ratio too: if total stake increases substantially, your APY will decrease, and you may want to explore other networks or DeFi strategies. Tools like Zapper, DeBank, and Staking Rewards provide consolidated dashboards for cross-chain staking portfolio management.

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Es seguro el staking de criptomonedas?
Staking on large Proof of Stake networks such as Ethereum and Solana is widely used, but it is not risk-free. Slashing can reduce your stake if your validator misbehaves or stays offline for long periods. Unbonding periods mean you cannot sell during a market drop. Liquid staking adds smart contract risk on top of network risk. To limit exposure, choose validators with a long clean record, spread your stake across several of them, and read the protocol documentation before you deposit.
¿Cuánto puedo ganar con el staking?
Staking rewards vary by network and move with the total amount staked, the network inflation schedule and validator commission. Ethereum pays one of the lower rates among large networks; the live figure is published on the Ethereum launchpad. Networks with high inflation, such as Cosmos Hub, quote higher nominal rates, but part of that reward only offsets dilution. Liquid staking protocols also deduct a fee: Lido takes 10% of staking rewards, per its documentation. Check the current rate at the source before you stake.
Staking means locking tokens to help secure a Proof of Stake blockchain. Rewards come from new token issuance and transaction fees. Lending means depositing tokens into a protocol such as Aave or Morpho, where borrowers pay interest to use your capital. Staking usually involves an unbonding period. Lending usually allows withdrawal at any time, as long as the pool has enough free liquidity. Both are forms of passive income, with different risk profiles.
¿Puedo retirar mi cripto en cualquier momento?
It depends on the network. Ethereum uses an exit queue whose length depends on how many validators are leaving at the same time: it can take under a day when the queue is empty and much longer when many validators exit at once. Solana stake deactivates at the next epoch boundary, roughly two days. Cosmos Hub applies a 21-day unbonding period, and Polkadot 28 days. To avoid the wait, liquid staking protocols such as Lido or Jito issue a tradeable token (stETH, JitoSOL) that represents your staked position and can be sold on a decentralized exchange.
Liquid staking lets you stake and receive a derivative token (such as stETH or rETH) that represents your staked position. This token can be traded, used as collateral in DeFi lending protocols or deposited into liquidity pools for extra yield. Native staking locks your tokens with a validator, and you cannot use them for anything else until you unstake. Liquid staking adds smart contract risk and a protocol fee, but keeps your capital usable.
No. Most stakers delegate their tokens to an existing validator rather than running their own node. Running a validator requires technical skills, dedicated hardware or a server, a minimum stake (32 ETH on Ethereum, per ethereum.org) and constant uptime. Delegation lets you earn rewards by assigning your tokens to a validator while keeping ownership of them, and you can redelegate or unstake later. Liquid staking protocols such as Lido and Rocket Pool go one step further: you deposit tokens and the protocol selects validators for you.
