¿Qué es Aave?

Aave is a decentralized, non-custodial lending and borrowing protocol and one of the building blocks of decentralized finance (DeFi). Anyone with a crypto wallet can supply digital assets to liquidity pools to earn interest, or borrow assets by posting collateral. There is no intermediary, credit check or bank in the process.

The protocol was founded by Stani Kulechov, a Finnish entrepreneur who entered crypto lending in 2017 with a project called ETHLend. ETHLend was a peer-to-peer marketplace where users posted and filled individual loan orders on Ethereum. The model had a liquidity problem: matching one lender with one borrower was slow and often failed.

In September 2018, ETHLend rebranded to Aave, a Finnish word meaning "ghost." The name reflects the idea of an open-source protocol whose infrastructure stays invisible to users. The rebrand also changed the architecture. Aave moved from peer-to-peer matching to a pooled model: lenders deposit into shared liquidity pools, and borrowers draw from those pools.

Aave V1 launched in January 2020 and grew quickly during the "DeFi Summer" of that year. Aave V2 followed in December 2020 with debt tokenization, credit delegation and flash loan improvements. Aave V3, released in March 2022, is the current version. It introduced Efficiency Mode, Isolation Mode and cross-chain Portals. Aave V3 is deployed on Ethereum and on many other networks, including Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Base, BNB Chain, Scroll and Gnosis. The current list of deployments is in the Aave docs and on DefiLlama (see Sources).

Cómo funciona Aave V3

Aave V3 uses a pooled lending model: suppliers and borrowers interact through shared liquidity pools. The core mechanics below are worth understanding before you deposit.

Modelo de suministro y préstamo

When you supply assets to Aave, your tokens go into a liquidity pool and you receive aTokens in return. For example, supplying 1,000 USDC gives you 1,000 aUSDC. aTokens are interest-bearing: their balance grows automatically as borrowers pay interest. The APY you earn follows the utilization rate of the pool. The higher the borrowing demand, the more suppliers earn.

To borrow, you first supply collateral and then take a loan against it. Aave requires overcollateralization: your collateral must always be worth more than your debt. Each asset has a loan-to-value (LTV) ratio, set by governance, that caps how much you can borrow. With an LTV of 80%, you can borrow up to $800 against $1,000 of collateral.

Tasas variables vs tasas fijas

Aave V3 launched with two borrowing modes: a variable rate that moves with pool utilization, and a stable rate that changed less often but was usually higher. Governance has since disabled stable-rate borrowing on the main markets, and the V3.1 upgrade removed the stable rate mode from the codebase, per the Aave docs. New loans use the variable rate. It is usually lower in normal conditions but can rise sharply when a pool is heavily borrowed.

Factor de salud y liquidación

Every borrowing position on Aave has a health factor, a number that shows how close the position is to liquidation. Above 1.0, the position is not liquidatable. At 1.0 or below, third-party liquidators can repay part of your debt and take your collateral at a discount. To avoid liquidation, keep a comfortable buffer above the liquidation threshold, especially in volatile markets.

eMode

Modo de Eficiencia (eMode)

eMode gives borrowers higher LTV ratios (for example 97% in some categories, per the Aave docs) when the collateral and the borrowed asset track the same price. Supplying stETH and borrowing ETH is a typical case. This raises capital efficiency for strategies such as leveraged staking, and also raises liquidation risk if the two assets drift apart.

ISO

Modo de Aislamiento

Isolation Mode lets Aave governance list newer or riskier assets with guardrails. An isolated asset has a debt ceiling that caps total borrowing against it, and a borrower using it as collateral cannot mix it with other collateral types. This limits the damage a single asset can do to the wider protocol.

P

Portales (Liquidez entre cadenas)

Portals allow liquidity to move between Aave V3 deployments on different networks. An approved bridge protocol can mint aTokens on the destination chain against aTokens burned on the source chain, so a position can move across chains without being unwound. Portals are a building block for Aave's multi-chain design; only bridges approved by governance can use them.

Concepto clave: Tasa de utilización

The utilization rate is the share of supplied assets that is currently borrowed. If $80M out of $100M in a USDC pool is borrowed, utilization is 80%. Aave's interest rate model uses a kinked curve. Rates rise gradually up to an optimal utilization target set per asset by governance (often around 80% to 90%), then rise sharply above it. The steep part of the curve encourages repayments and new supply, so liquidity stays available for withdrawals.

Características clave de Aave

Aave introduced several mechanisms that have since become common across DeFi. Here are the features that distinguish it from other lending protocols.

Préstamos flash

Aave introduced flash loans: uncollateralized loans that must be repaid within a single transaction. They are used for arbitrage, collateral swaps and self-liquidation. A small premium applies; the current rate is in the Aave docs.

Algorithmic Interest Rates

Supply and borrow rates are set by a utilization curve, not by a company. Each asset has its own curve and optimal utilization point, both set by governance. Rates update with every transaction.

Delegación de crédito

Depositors can delegate their borrowing power to another address, which lets a trusted party borrow against their collateral. This makes undercollateralized lending possible through off-chain agreements between the two parties.

Despliegue multi-cadena

Aave V3 is deployed on Ethereum and on many other networks, including Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Base, BNB Chain, Scroll and Gnosis. The current list is in the Aave docs.

Módulo de seguridad

The Safety Module lets AAVE holders stake their tokens as a backstop against protocol shortfall events. Stakers earn rewards in exchange for the risk of being slashed.

GHO Stablecoin

Aave's native decentralized stablecoin, minted by borrowers against their Aave collateral. stkAAVE holders get a discount on the GHO borrow rate.

GHO: Aave's Stablecoin Nativo

GHO is Aave's decentralized, multi-collateral stablecoin, soft-pegged to the US dollar. It launched on Ethereum mainnet in July 2023 and extends Aave's ecosystem from lending and borrowing into stablecoins.

Unlike USDC or USDT, which are backed by fiat reserves held by an issuer, GHO is minted by borrowers on Aave. When a user borrows GHO, new tokens are created. When they repay, those tokens are burned. GHO supply is therefore backed by overcollateralized positions on Aave, in a design similar to DAI.

GHO uses a facilitator model. Rather than being minted only through the Aave pool, GHO can be minted by approved "facilitators": entities or protocols that governance authorizes to create GHO under set conditions and capacity limits, called buckets. The Aave V3 pool on Ethereum is the main facilitator. The design leaves room for others, such as real-world asset protocols or other DeFi protocols, subject to a governance vote.

Mecánicas clave de GHO

1
Acuñación sobrecolateralizada

GHO is minted by borrowing against collateral supplied on Aave, so every GHO is backed by more than $1 of crypto assets at the time it is minted.

2
Descuento stkAAVE

Users who stake AAVE in the Safety Module (stkAAVE) receive a discount on the GHO borrow rate. The discount rate and the amount of GHO covered per stkAAVE are set by governance and published in the GHO docs. This gives holders a reason to stake AAVE.

3
Tasa de interés establecida por la gobernanza

Unlike regular Aave borrow rates, which follow a utilization curve, the GHO borrow rate is set by Aave governance. This lets the DAO manage GHO supply and support the peg.

4
Ingresos para DAO

All interest paid on GHO borrowing goes to the Aave DAO treasury, per the GHO docs. In regular Aave markets, most interest goes to suppliers. This makes GHO a revenue source for the protocol.

GHO vs otras stablecoins

GHO competes with DAI (Sky, formerly MakerDAO), FRAX and crvUSD (Curve) among decentralized stablecoins. Its distinguishing features are direct integration with Aave's liquidity pools, the stkAAVE discount and the facilitator model for controlled expansion. For a comparison of stablecoins and their yield options, see our Stablecoin Yield Guide.

Rendimiento en Aave

Supplying assets to Aave is one of the simpler ways to earn yield in DeFi. Here is how it works, what drives the rate and how it compares with alternatives.

Cómo suministrar activos

Supplying on Aave takes four steps: connect your wallet, select the asset, approve the token and deposit. You receive aTokens (for example aUSDC for a USDC deposit) that represent your position and accrue interest automatically. There is no lock-up. You can withdraw at any time, as long as the pool has enough free liquidity. The APY you earn depends on borrowing demand for that asset.

Tasas de suministro típicas

Supply rates on Aave change with borrowing demand and differ by network. Rather than quote figures that go stale, the table below shows what drives the rate for each asset. The live rates are on app.aave.com (see Sources).

Activo Rate Profile Notas
USDC Variable, follows stablecoin borrowing demand One of the largest stablecoin markets on Aave
USDT Variable, usually close to USDC Rates diverge when demand for one stablecoin spikes
DAI Variable, smaller market than USDC Stablecoin descentralizada
ETH / WETH Usually lower than stablecoins Large supply, borrowing demand driven by leveraged staking
WBTC Usually the lowest of the group Mostly used as collateral, limited borrowing demand
GHO N/D (solo préstamo) Emitido, no suministrado

Rates move continuously and differ by network. Check app.aave.com for the current figures.

Riesgos de suministrar en Aave

Supplying carries less risk than borrowing, but it still carries risk. Smart contract risk exists with any DeFi protocol. When utilization is very high, you may not be able to withdraw your full deposit until borrowers repay or new supply arrives. There is also oracle risk: a faulty price feed can create bad debt that falls on suppliers.

Cómo optimizar el rendimiento

To improve your yield on Aave, compare the same asset across Aave deployments on different networks, since rates depend on local borrowing demand. Check whether a market pays extra AAVE or third-party token incentives. You can also use a yield aggregator that rebalances across protocols for you, at the cost of an extra layer of smart contract risk.

Coinstancy: Earn 7.50% APY on USDC, Simply

If managing Aave positions yourself feels complex, Coinstancy offers a simpler route. Coinstancy Dollar Savings pays a fixed 7.50% APY on USDC. The APY shown is the fixed rate currently in force. It may be revised as market conditions evolve; a new rate applies to existing balances as well as new deposits. Your USDC first enters a secure multisignature wallet operated by Coinstancy before being deployed into the selected on-chain strategies. Those strategies can include DeFi lending protocols such as Aave, Morpho and Compound. No wallet setup, no on-chain transactions to manage, no manual rebalancing.

  • 7.50% fixed APY, versus a variable rate on Aave that moves with utilization
  • Allocation to on-chain strategies handled for you
  • No crypto wallet required: sign up with email
  • No lock-up. You can request a withdrawal at any time. Complete requests are normally settled within 48 calendar hours; final network confirmation may take longer.

Token AAVE & Gobernanza

AAVE is the governance and utility token of the Aave protocol. It started as LEND, the ETHLend token, and migrated to AAVE in October 2020 at a 100:1 ratio. That cut the supply from 1.3 billion LEND to 16 million AAVE.

Tokenómica

AAVE has a total supply of 16 million tokens, a fixed cap with no ongoing emission schedule. The distribution included an ecosystem reserve managed by the DAO, early investors and the founding team. The DAO treasury holds AAVE that it uses for incentives and protocol development; the live treasury figures are on the Aave governance site.

Staking del Módulo de Seguridad

AAVE holders can stake their tokens in the Safety Module and receive stkAAVE in return. The Safety Module is a backstop: if the protocol suffers a shortfall event (bad debt from failed liquidations), governance can slash a share of the staked tokens to cover the deficit. In return, stakers earn rewards paid in AAVE and get a discount on the GHO borrow rate. Unstaking requires a cooldown period. The slashing share, the reward rate and the cooldown are all set by governance and have changed over time; the current values are in the Aave docs (see Sources).

Proceso de Gobernanza

Aave is governed on-chain by token holders. Proposals go through a multi-stage process, described in the Aave governance docs:

1
Forum Discussion and TEMP CHECK

A post on the Aave governance forum where the community discusses the idea, gives feedback and refines the design. A TEMP CHECK vote on Snapshot then gauges support.

2
ARFC Snapshot Vote

An Aave Request for Final Comments (ARFC) sets out the final parameters. A gasless off-chain vote on Snapshot confirms support before an on-chain proposal is submitted.

3
Propuesta de Mejora de Aave (AIP)

The formal on-chain vote. AAVE and stkAAVE holders vote with their tokens. A proposal needs a quorum and a majority to pass.

4
Ejecución

If the vote passes, the proposal waits in a timelock before it executes on-chain. The delay gives users time to react before changes take effect.

Voting power: both AAVE and stkAAVE grant voting power. Holders can delegate that power to another address without transferring their tokens, which lets specialized delegates vote on their behalf. Aave governance controls interest rate strategies, new asset listings, risk parameters and treasury allocations.

Riesgos & Seguridad

Aave has operated since 2020 and holds billions of dollars in deposits (live figure on DefiLlama). Before you deposit, it helps to understand both its security measures and the risks that remain.

Medidas de Seguridad

Amplio historial de auditorías

Aave's contracts have been audited by OpenZeppelin, Trail of Bits, Sigma Prime, Certora, PeckShield and other firms. Each major version (V1, V2, V3) went through several independent audits before deployment; the reports are listed in the Aave docs.

Verificación formal

Aave V3 has been formally verified by Certora. Formal verification checks mathematically that certain properties of the smart contract code always hold, which adds assurance beyond a manual audit.

Módulo de seguridad

The Safety Module holds staked AAVE and other staked assets that can be slashed to cover shortfall events. It acts as a financial backstop for the protocol; the live amount staked is shown in the Aave app.

Programa de recompensas por errores

Aave runs a bug bounty program that pays security researchers for responsibly disclosed vulnerabilities. The current scope and maximum reward are published on the bounty page linked from the Aave docs.

Socios de gestión de riesgos

Aave governance works with risk service providers, such as Chaos Labs, that monitor markets and propose changes to risk parameters. Their reports are posted on the governance forum.

Riesgos clave

Riesgo de contrato inteligente

Audits and formal verification reduce risk; they do not remove it. No smart contract can be proven fully secure. The Aave V3 codebase is large, which gives it a wider attack surface than minimal protocols. Aave also uses upgradable proxy contracts, so a flawed or malicious governance upgrade is a risk. Timelocks and guardian safeguards limit that risk without removing it.

Riesgo de liquidación (prestatarios)

If you borrow on Aave and your collateral falls in value or your debt rises, your health factor can drop below 1.0 and trigger liquidation. Liquidators repay part of your debt and receive your collateral plus a liquidation bonus that governance sets per asset. In sharp market crashes, liquidations can cascade. A common rule of thumb is to keep the health factor above 1.5, and above 2.0 if you want a wide margin.

Riesgo de Oráculo

Aave uses Chainlink price feeds as its main oracle, per the Aave docs. If a feed stalls, returns a wrong price or is manipulated, the protocol can liquidate positions wrongly or allow undercollateralized borrowing that creates bad debt. Aave applies safeguards such as price caps and sentinel checks on some assets, but oracle risk cannot be removed entirely.

Riesgo de Gobernanza

Because Aave V3 uses upgradable contracts, governance decisions directly affect the protocol's security. A malicious or poorly reviewed proposal could introduce a vulnerability. Timelocks and guardian roles provide safeguards, but voting power concentrated among large holders remains a consideration.

Riesgo de Liquidez

In extreme market stress, utilization can approach 100%, which temporarily stops suppliers from withdrawing. Aave's rate model discourages this by raising rates sharply at high utilization, but short liquidity crunches have happened. Suppliers should assume that instant withdrawal is not always possible.

Cómo usar Aave: paso a paso

Here is a step-by-step walkthrough of supplying assets on Aave V3. You need a Web3 wallet (such as MetaMask), some of the network's gas token (ETH on Ethereum) for transaction fees, and the assets you want to supply.

Suministrando activos para obtener rendimiento

1
Conecta tu billetera

Visit app.aave.com and click "Connect Wallet." Aave supports MetaMask, WalletConnect, Coinbase Wallet, and other popular wallets. Select the network you want to use (Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, etc.).

2

4
Monitorea tu posición

Your aToken balance grows as interest accrues. You can track your position, earned interest and current APY on the Aave dashboard. No claiming is needed: interest accrues automatically to your aToken balance.

5
Retirar & Reclamar recompensas

  • Compare chains: check APYs across networks. Rates differ by deployment because borrowing demand and incentive programs differ.
  • Watch gas costs: On Ethereum mainnet, gas fees can eat into small deposits. Consider L2s for smaller amounts.
  • Enable as collateral: If you plan to borrow later, make sure your supplied asset is enabled as collateral in the dashboard.
  • Monitor health factor: if you borrow, keep your health factor well above 1.0 (many users target 2.0) for a margin during volatile markets.

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Qué es Aave y cómo funciona?
Aave is a decentralized, non-custodial lending protocol that runs on Ethereum and several other blockchains. Users supply crypto assets to shared liquidity pools to earn interest, or borrow from those pools after posting more collateral than they borrow. Interest rates are set by an algorithm that follows the share of each pool that is borrowed. Aave is one of the largest DeFi protocols by total value locked; the live figure is on DefiLlama (see Sources).
¿Cómo difiere Aave V3 de versiones anteriores?
Aave V3, released in March 2022, added Efficiency Mode (eMode), which allows higher loan-to-value ratios when collateral and debt track the same price. It added Isolation Mode, which lists newer assets with a debt ceiling and collateral restrictions. It added Portals for moving liquidity between Aave deployments on different chains. V3 also reduced gas costs, unified the codebase across chains and let governance tune risk parameters per asset and per chain. The full list is in the Aave V3 documentation.
¿Qué son los préstamos flash y quién los utiliza?
A flash loan is an uncollateralized loan that must be borrowed and repaid within a single blockchain transaction. If the loan is not repaid, the whole transaction reverts, so the pool is never left short. Aave introduced the concept in DeFi. Developers and traders use flash loans for arbitrage, collateral swaps, self-liquidation and adjusting leverage in one transaction. Aave charges a small premium on each flash loan; the current rate is published in the Aave docs. Most users never take a flash loan directly.
¿Es Aave seguro? ¿Qué ocurre si el protocolo es hackeado?
Aave has operated since 2020 and its core contracts have been audited by several firms, including OpenZeppelin, Trail of Bits, Sigma Prime and Certora, with formal verification on V3. If a shortfall event occurs, such as bad debt from failed liquidations, the Safety Module can slash a share of staked AAVE to cover it. Aave also runs a bug bounty. Still, no DeFi protocol is free of risk: smart contract bugs, oracle failures, governance mistakes and extreme market moves can all cause losses. Only deposit what you can afford to lose.
¿Cómo se compara Aave con Coinstancy para obtener rendimiento?
Aave gives you direct access to lending markets, but you need a crypto wallet, gas for transactions and some DeFi knowledge. Its USDC supply rate is variable and moves with borrowing demand; the live rate is on app.aave.com. Coinstancy Dollar Savings pays a fixed 7.50% APY on USDC (the rate currently in force, which may be revised). No wallet is needed, and allocation across on-chain strategies, which can include protocols such as Aave, Morpho and Compound, is handled for you. If you want full control, borrowing or flash loans, use Aave directly. If you want a fixed rate with less to manage, Coinstancy is designed for that.
