¿Qué es Solana?

Solana is a high-throughput Layer 1 blockchain launched in 2020 and designed for speed and low transaction costs. It combines Proof of Stake with Proof of History, a clock that orders transactions before consensus. Solana hosts a large DeFi, NFT and consumer app ecosystem.

Símbolo: SOL Desde 2020

¿Qué es Ethereum?

Ethereum is the largest smart contract platform by total value locked (live figure on DefiLlama) and developer activity. Launched in 2015, it pioneered programmable blockchains and hosts most major DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces and DAOs. Ethereum prioritizes decentralization and security, and scales through Layer 2 rollups.

Diferencias clave

Solana processes thousands of transactions per second on a single chain. Ethereum relies on Layer 2 rollups to scale beyond its roughly 15 to 30 TPS base layer.

Ethereum has far more validators than Solana (over a million validator keys versus roughly one to two thousand validators), although many Ethereum validators are run by the same operators.

Solana programs are written in Rust. Ethereum uses Solidity, which has a much larger developer community and more audited code libraries.

Solana fees are a fraction of a cent. Ethereum L1 fees vary with congestion, from under a dollar to tens of dollars at peaks.

Ethereum follows a modular scaling approach with separate L2 rollups. Solana keeps a monolithic design and optimizes a single high-performance chain.

Solana has had several full network outages, the most recent in February 2024. Ethereum L1 has never had a full outage since launch.

¿Cuál deberías elegir?

Solana and Ethereum represent two different approaches to scaling. Solana offers high throughput and very low fees on a single chain, which suits high-frequency uses such as trading and games. Ethereum offers a larger validator set, a longer track record and the deepest DeFi ecosystem, with scaling increasingly handled by L2 rollups. Your choice depends on whether you prioritize raw speed or the security and composability of the Ethereum ecosystem.

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Es Solana más rápido que Ethereum?
Yes, at the base layer. Solana produces a block about every 400 milliseconds and confirms most transactions in about a second, while Ethereum produces a block every 12 seconds and reaches full finality after about 13 minutes. Ethereum Layer 2 networks such as Arbitrum and Base also offer fast and cheap transactions.
¿Por qué las tarifas de Solana son tan bajas?
Solana's architecture is built for high throughput on a single chain, which spreads the cost of block production across many transactions. The base fee is fixed at 5,000 lamports per signature, a fraction of a cent; users can add a priority fee when the network is busy.
¿Ha tenido Solana interrupciones de red?
Yes. Solana had several full outages and periods of degraded performance, mostly in 2022, and a roughly five-hour outage in February 2024. The network has since shipped upgrades aimed at stability, and uptime has improved.
¿Cuál tiene más actividad DeFi, Solana o Ethereum?
Ethereum has the largest DeFi total value locked (TVL) and hosts most major protocols such as Aave, Uniswap and Sky (formerly MakerDAO). Solana's DeFi ecosystem, led by protocols such as Jupiter, Raydium and Marinade, is among the largest by TVL; see DefiLlama for live figures.
¿Puede Solana reemplazar a Ethereum?
It is unlikely that one will fully replace the other. They serve different use cases and design philosophies. Solana is strong in speed-sensitive applications, while Ethereum leads in security-critical DeFi and has the largest developer ecosystem. Both are likely to coexist.
